All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

It’s Time to Take Action on Risks to Your Home

There are some preventative measures in our homes that just seem like common sense—smoke detectors, outlet covers in houses with young ones, etc.—and yet many of us just don’t seem to take the time to make sure these measures are in place.

According to a recent report from The Hanover Insurance Group, most U.S. homeowners recognize the various risks facing their properties, but only a few take the necessary steps to protect themselves. For example:

  • 79% of homeowners understand the benefits of water sensors, yet just 16% have installed them. Similarly, while 76% are aware of automatic water shutoff systems, only 13% have actually installed one.
  • Although 61% of homeowners know that reinforcing roofs can reduce damage from wind and hail, only 17% have upgraded theirs. Meanwhile, 59% are aware of wind-rated garage doors, but just 10% have installed them.
  • Nearly 99% of homeowners report being educated on smoke detectors, but only 67% have installed them. Even fewer keep up with essential maintenance, like dryer vent cleaning or HVAC servicing. Alarmingly, home fires result in claims averaging over $75,000, not to mention the trauma experienced by the victims.

Why Don’t We Take Action on Known Risks?

Why is there such a disconnect between what we know to be “the right thing to do” and action?

  1. Cost is a Major Barrier: While some preventative measures seem affordable, others require a significant investment. Many homeowners recognize the value of protective measures but hesitate when faced with upfront expenses.
  2. Too Much Information, Not Enough Clarity: Although many homeowners are aware of the devices and upgrades that are available, it’s not always clear what is required versus what is recommended, and some people just aren’t sure how they should implement these changes.
  3. Uncertainty Over What to Tackle First: In our world of information overload, many people freeze when it comes to taking action on the lengthy lists of oughts and ought nots. Without some outside guidance, homeowners often feel overwhelmed and unsure where to begin and quit before they’ve even begun.

It’s understandable why we don’t take action, and yet, the risks are very real. According to the same report above:

  • 1 in 60 homeowners files a water damage claim annually.
  • 1 in 35 homeowners have made a wind or hail claim.
  • And roof-related issues account for 70‒90% of losses during severe storms.
